1968 Mercury Cougar 7-Litre GT-E
This 1968 Mercury Cougar is one of 394 ordered with the GT-E package for the model year, 357 of which were equipped with the W-code 427ci V8. Dubbed the 7-Litre GT-E, all were also equipped with a twin-scoop hood, silver-gray lower accents, heavy-duty suspension, power-assisted front disc brakes, power steering, 14″ styled-steel wheels, and a Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission as standard. This example was specified with Nordic Blue paintwork and Light Blue Laredo bucket seats, and it was first delivered in Virginia Beach. The car was restored before it was acquired by the current owner in 2018, and it has since been primarily used for display. Driven roughly 500 miles since completion of the restoration, this Cougar GT-E is now offered by the seller on behalf of its owner with a Deluxe Marti Report and a clean California title.
The GT-E featured a twin-scoop hood, revised grille and taillight treatments, 7-Litre GT-E badges, silver-gray lower accents, and quadruple exhaust outlets. This example was specified in Nordic Blue Poly, and per the seller, it was mounted restored between 15-20 years ago by Carlton Wright.
GT-Es were specified from the factory with a heavy-duty suspension with stiffer springs and a larger front sway bar, as well as power-assisted steering and power-assisted disc brakes. Chromed 14″ styled-steel wheels were also standard.
The car was specified with Light Blue Laredo bucket seats, front headrests, an AM radio, a remote-operated left mirror, the Decor Group, and tinted glass.
The steering wheel frames a 120-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 23k miles, approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership.
The W-code 427ci V8 featured 10.9:1 compression and a four-barrel carburetor from the factory. Per the seller, the engine and transmission were both replaced during the refurbishment. Castings E1/ J23.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Merc-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission.
