1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet 5-Speed

This 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 was ordered new from Dan Stanley Ford of Joplin, Missouri, with a Q-code 428ci Cobra Jet V8 and Candyapple Red paint. Work beginning in 2021 included installing a Tremec five-speed manual transmission, an aftermarket 9″ rear end, and adjustable QA1 shocks, and fitting the engine with an Inglese eight-stack throttle body setup, Holley fuel injection, a COMP hydraulic roller camshaft, and an uprated fuel system. The car was repainted prior to the current owner’s acquisition in 2021, and exterior details include matte black Mach 1 stripes, a hood scoop, and 18″ Legendary wheels. The cabin has been reupholstered in black vinyl and appointed with a retro-look stereo and a Hurst shifter. Wilwood disc brakes, Borgeson power steering, and exhaust headers were also specified during the build. This Mach 1 is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a Deluxe Marti Report, build records, and a clean California title in the current owner’s name.

The car was repainted in Candyapple Red in 2014, per the seller, who notes that paint-protection film has been applied to the fenders behind each tire. Exterior elements include a hood scoop, a front spoiler, matte black Mach 1 stripes, Holley headlights, and fabricated taillight lenses.

Legendary knockoff-style 18″ wheels are mounted with a mixed set of Nitto NT555 G2 front and Continental ExtremeContact Sport rear tires. The suspension has been modified with QA1 adjustable shocks, uprated front coil springs, and a Maier Racing panhard bar and upper control arms. The Wilwood disc brake setup is comprised of an aluminum master cylinder as well as six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.

The front bucket and individual rear seats are upholstered in channeled black vinyl, and a full-length center console has a storage compartment, cupholders, and a Hurst shifter. Insulation material has been applied in the cabin, and the seats received replacement foam, per the seller. Appointments include three-point front seatbelts, a Retrosound Bluetooth receiver, and aftermarket speakers in the parcel shelf and kick panels. A Skar Audio amplifier is found in the trunk.

The billet steering wheel frames a suite of AutoMeter Sport-Comp II gauges, including a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and supplementary displays. The odometer shows 4,500 miles, all of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 428ci Cobra Jet V8 received aluminum Trick Flow cylinder heads, a COMP hydraulic roller camshaft, and revised lifters in 2021, and records in the gallery indicate a compression test was performed at that time. Cooling is handled by an aluminum radiator with twin electric fans, and further equipment includes a Concept One accessory drive setup, a Borgeson power steering system, a vintage-look battery, and finned Cobra Jet-branded valve covers.

The Inglese eight-stack of throttle bodies is linked with a Holley Terminator X EFI setup, and an updated fuel tank, an in-tank pump, and a fuel pressure regulator were added as well. MSD ignition, a Canton oil pan, and a Powermaster alternator were specified during the build. An undated dynamometer sheet in the gallery indicates a peak output of 460 horsepower and 505 lb-ft of torque.

The Tremec TKX five-speed manual transmission utilizes a McLeod twin-disc clutch kit and a MalWood hydraulic clutch master cylinder, and an aluminum flywheel has been installed. The rear end is a Quick Performance unit with a Truetrac differential and 3.50:1 gears, per the seller. FPA long-tube headers are linked with a custom X-pipe exhaust system with MagnaFlow mufflers. The rear axle is said to contact the exhaust pipes when going over large bumps. The seller reports a nonfunctional cabin heater with a possible leak from the heater core as well as an intermittent oil droplet and that the valve cover heads only have five bolts.
